Stedi is an API-first healthcare clearinghouse powering eligibility, claims, and payer connectivity for modern healthcare applications.

Roughly one-third of Stedi’s customers are generative AI companies building AI agents for revenue cycle management (RCM). These teams were building voice agents, workflow agents, and automation tools — but connecting those agents to eligibility APIs required custom integration logic and brittle prompt engineering.

There was clear demand for infrastructure purpose-built for agents.

Overview

We introduced AI-native workflows directly into the clearinghouse layer.

This included launching:

1. Stedi MCP Server

The hardest part of launching the MCP server wasn’t exposing APIs. It was designing the context.

In practice, the quality of the MCP experience is determined by how well you structure:

Tools (what actions the agent can take)
Prompts (how the agent reasons about next steps)
Resources (the contextual knowledge that defines correct behavior)

We learned that agents don’t behave reliably unless you clearly define the happy path. To get consistent outcomes, we had to:

Define what a “successful eligibility workflow” looks like
Provide structured guidance about when to retry vs. escalate
